How to pick a battery chainsaw for pruning and backyard firewood: 4–6 inch one-hand pruning saws vs 8–10 inch chainsaws, bar length vs cutting capacity from maker specs, Korean prices in October 2026, battery and chain oil care, and chainsaw accident data and safety rules.
Once the leaves fall, overgrown persimmon branches and storm-broken limbs stand out, and firewood for the winter stove needs cutting. A hand saw tires your arm, and a gas chainsaw means starting, noise and fumes. That is why many rural households now look first at battery chainsaws. The problem is the range, from 4-inch one-hand saws to 14-inch chainsaws.
Bottom line: For branches up to wrist thickness, a 4–6 inch one-hand pruning saw; for firewood logs thicker than your thigh, an 8–10 inch or larger chainsaw. Maker specs show bar length and maximum cut are nearly the same (6-inch bar, 161 mm max). Buying a tool from the brand whose batteries you already own saves a lot. On October 9, 2026, a name-brand 6-inch bare tool cost about KRW 213,000 on Coupang and an 8-inch kit with one battery about KRW 255,000. Half of chainsaw injuries are to arms and hands, so get safety glasses and chain oil first.
1. Cordless, corded or gas?
Cordless suits yards, farm huts and orchard pruning; corded suits work near an outlet; gas suits forests, big trees and all-day work. This guide focuses on cordless.
2. Bar length and cutting capacity
You will read rules like “cut up to two inches less than the bar,” but we could not confirm them in maker documents. Here is what makers publish:
| Model (maker specs) | Bar | Max cut | Weight with battery | Auto oil |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Makita DUC101 (18V one-hand) | 100 mm (4”) | 111 mm | 1.6–2.0 kg | Yes |
| Makita DUC150 (18V one-hand) | 150 mm (6”) | 161 mm | 1.7–2.0 kg | Yes |
| Bosch EasyChain 18V-15-7 | 15 cm | 13 cm diameter | 1.7 kg | No |
| Bosch UniversalChain 18 | 20 cm | 13.5 cm diameter | 3.0 kg | Yes |
| Makita DUC254 (18V top handle) | 250 mm (10”) | – | 2.8–3.2 kg | Yes |
Bar length is close to the upper limit of what you can cut in one pass. Makita says the DUC150 makes about 210 cuts through 50 mm cedar on one 18V 3Ah battery. Chain speed matters too: 8.0 m/s on the DUC150 versus up to 24 m/s on the DUC254.
3. Prices in Korea (October 9, 2026, Coupang)
| Type | Example | Price |
|---|---|---|
| No-name mini one-hand saw with battery | 15–16 cm, 21V packs | KRW 40,000–90,000 |
| Name-brand 6” bare tool | Makita DUC150Z | KRW 213,000 |
| Name-brand 8” bare tool | Keyang LS20BLZ | KRW 118,700 |
| 8” kit with one battery | Keyang LS20BL-O (20V MAX) | KRW 255,000 |
| 10” with battery | Makita DUC254 (5.0Ah) | KRW 321,900 |
A UK government product safety report found some online mini chainsaws lacked a manual chain brake and had charger shock and fire risks. Check for KC certification, a chain brake, a chain cover and replacement chains.
4. Pick the battery platform first
If your sprayer, trimmer and blower already share one brand, buy that brand’s bare tool. Makita’s charger manual says not to charge below 10°C or above 40°C. Bosch says to charge and use at 0–45°C, store at –20 to 50°C, and not to leave batteries in a hot car. In winter, keep batteries indoors and let cold ones warm up before charging.
5. Chain oil, tension and sharpening
Bosch notes its saw ships without oil and running dry damages it; one fill lasts about 15 minutes on that model. Use biodegradable chain oil, never waste oil. Check oiling by holding the bar tip 20 cm from paper; check tension before use, after the first cut and about every 10 minutes, with 5–10 mm of lift at mid-bar. Do not tighten a hot chain. Unless experienced, replace or have chains serviced rather than sharpening yourself. Not every model has auto oiling.
6. Safety
The Korea Consumer Agency logged 356 chainsaw accidents in 2018–2020, with 189 in 2020, up 89% from 2019. People in their 60s or older made up 57.6% and those in their 50s 26.7%. Injuries were to arms and hands (49.4%) and hips, legs and feet (44.1%); 86.8% were cuts, and 67.1% happened at homes. Causes included kickback and clothing or gloves caught in the chain.
- Wear safety glasses and hearing protection; head, hand, leg and foot protection is recommended.
- Kickback happens when the bar tip touches something or the cut pinches the chain. Never cut with the tip.
- Do not cut above shoulder height or overreach; never use a chainsaw in a tree.
- Hold two-handed saws with both hands; never hold the branch with your free hand.
- If the saw is pinched, engage the chain brake, switch off and lever the cut open. Cover the chain when moving and keep 3 m from co-workers (Korea Forest Service).
7. Checklist
- Pruning up to wrist thickness: 4–6 inch; firewood logs: 8–10 inch or more.
- Bar length roughly equals maximum cut.
- Buy into the battery platform you already own.
- Check KC certification, chain brake and cover on cheap mini saws.
- Add chain oil before first use; check tension every 10 minutes.
- Store batteries indoors in winter. Buy safety glasses first.
