Smart Plug Buying Guide 2026: Remote Power for a Farm Shed, Heater Caveats

How to choose a smart plug for a Korean farm shed or greenhouse: 16 A ratings and 3,520 W at 220 V, the 80% headroom one maker recommends, heater restrictions, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and LTE routers, estimating power bills with KEPCO tariffs, and October 2026 prices.

Driving home from the farm shed, you wonder whether you left the light on. A smart plug lets you switch it off from your phone and shows how much power each device uses. The device most people want to plug in, a heater, is the exception.

Bottom line: For a farm shed, choose a 16 A, 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi smart plug with energy monitoring and KC certification numbers. 16 A at 220 V is about 3,520 W, but Hejhome recommends staying within 80% (about 2,800 W) and says heaters and other heating appliances must not be connected. Use smart plugs for lights, fans and routers, and leave heating to the heater’s own thermostat. On October 10, 2026, 16 A energy-monitoring plugs cost KRW 15,000–23,000 on Coupang.

1. What a smart plug does

It sits between the wall socket and a device. From a phone app you can switch power on and off, set schedules and timers, and, with energy monitoring, see live watts and daily or monthly kWh. In a farm shed that means turning off forgotten lights, running a fan on a schedule and finding which device uses the most power.

Hejhome’s official guide recommends using the Pro within about 80% of its rating (about 2,800 W), because motors and heaters can draw a surge when they start. It also says high-power products such as air conditioners, outdoor units and heaters cannot be connected. We did not find the same wording for the Tapo P115, but that does not mean heaters are approved; check each manual’s list of prohibited devices. Korea Electrical Safety Corporation also advises checking power strip ratings and not plugging high-capacity appliances into power strips.

3. Wi-Fi and sheds without internet

Both the Tapo P115 and Hejhome Pro connect directly to a 2.4 GHz router without a hub. Remote control needs internet at the shed; without a wired line, an LTE router with a data plan is the usual option. We could not confirm from official sources whether schedules keep running when the internet drops or what state the plug returns to after a power cut, so ask the maker if outages are common.

4. Estimating the bill

Multiply a device’s monthly kWh by the KEPCO rate. Residential low-voltage rates (table effective November 9, 2023): tier 1 at 120.0 won/kWh (up to 200 kWh outside summer), tier 2 at 214.6 won/kWh (201–400 kWh), tier 3 at 307.3 won/kWh. Climate and fuel adjustment charges are added on the bill. Agricultural (B) low-voltage power for crop cultivation is 65.9 won/kWh (effective April 1, 2025). A device using 30 kWh a month costs about 3,600 won at tier 1 or 6,438 won at tier 2. Standby power varies by device; plug it in, switch it off and read the watts. One watt for a full month is 0.72 kWh.

5. Prices on October 10, 2026 (Coupang, before coupons)

Tapo P100M (10 A) KRW 14,400; Tapo P110M (16 A) KRW 15,400; Hejhome Mini KRW 17,900; Tapo P115 (16 A) KRW 19,900; Hejhome Pro (16 A) KRW 22,600. Look for a radio conformity number (starting R-R-) and a KC electrical safety certification number on the product.

6. Cautions

Smart plugs are for indoor use, so keep them away from greenhouse moisture. Check that motor devices such as pumps and fans stay within 80% of the plug rating. Do not stack plugs on power strips, and do not remotely switch on devices that heat or use water when nobody is there.
